Acépromazine, propofol et ECG chez le chat L`utilisation du propofol après une pré-médication à l`acépromazine est une pratique courante en clinique chez les animaux de compagnie. Mais elle conduit à une diminution de la fréquence cardiaque et de la pression artérielle qui mérite d`être reconsidérée chez les animaux malades – problème qui ne se pose pas chez les chats sains. The study, a prospective, uncontrolled experimental trial, included twenty healthy adult crossbred male and female cats aged between 3 and 5 years, weighing 2.8-5.0 kg (mean 3.9 kg). Cats were pre-medicated with acepromazine 0.1 mg kg1 subcutaneously and anesthesia was induced with intravenous (IV) propofol 6 mg kg1 and maintained with a continuous infusion of propofol at 0.5 mg kg1 minute1 for 60 minutes. Electrocardiographic parameters and systolic blood pressure obtained by Doppler ultrasound were recorded before pre-medication (T0), 30 (T30), and 60 (T60) minutes after beginning the continuous infusion, and 30 minutes after its cessation (T90). Repeated measures anova was used to perform statistical analysis. A significant decrease in heart rate was observed at all time points when compared with T0 values. The PR interval increased significantly at T60 and T90. Systolic blood pressures during anesthesia were significantly lower than at T0 and T90. The changes seen were not clinically important in normal cats but given the reduction in heart rate and systolic blood pressure, careful consideration should be given before using this technique in patients in which hypotension or a reduction in heart rate would be poorly tolerated. Fixateur externe circulaire pour allonger un membre de chien Cette chirurgie originale a été réalisée grâce à des chercheurs vétérinaires et des médecins humains à l`université de Floride de Gainesville: ils se sont associés pour développer les composants nécessaires à l`application de la technologie humaine de fixateurs externes circulaires aux animaux. Le Collège de Médecine Vétérinaire de l`Université de Floride (UF), l`Hopital pour enfants Texas Scottish Rites et IMEX Veterinary Inc. ont uni leurs compétences afin de perfectionner l`utilisation de la technique chez les animaux. Les chirurgiens vétérinaires ont ainsi appliqué leurs connaissances sur environ 10 chiens par mois, le premier ayant bénéficié de la technique en 1996, rapporte le Dr. Dans Lewis, professeur de chirurgie des animaux de compagnie. `Les vétérinaires nous réfèrent régulièrement leurs clients afin que nous examinions leurs animaux souffrant de fractures ou anomalies des membres car nos chirurgiens ont travaillé avec cette technique, avec beaucoup de réussite`, déclare Sarah Carey, responsable des relations extérieures de l`UF. Le fixateur d`Ilizarov, un modèle particulier de fixateur externe, a été utilisé dans le traitement chirurgical du membre d`Akita, abîmé lors d`une bagarre avec un autre chien. Akita avait déjà subi une amputation d`un membre antérieur, et l`autre membre n`avait pas une croissance normale. La technique utilisée a permis de réduire la boiterie et de limiter le stress appliqué au dos et aux membres postérieurs. `La croissance du membre ayant été traité par les chirurgiens de l`UF n`a pas permis d`atteindre la longueur des membres postérieurs, et le chien marchait avec une avant-main largement abaissée`, ajoute Carey. Le membre a donc ensuite été allongé de 30%, avec simultanément une correction de la rotation et un renforcement. La technique est utilisée à l`Université pour réduire les fractures des membres, les arthrodèses et la correction des anomalies des membres chez les animaux de compagnie. Les chirurgiens de l`université ont une bonne expérience de cette technique et font désormais référence en la matière, selon Carey. L`université travaille en étroite collaboration avec IMEX Veterinary Inc et l`unité de recherche de l`hôpital pour enfants Texas Scottish Rites afin d`adapter le matériel de médecine humaine aux animaux. Administration de topique oculaire chez le chien et le cheval Conjonctivites, uvéites, lésions cornéennes ou autres affections oculaires sont fréquentes chez le chien et le cheval et nécessitent un traitement topique. Mais quel rôle exact ces traitements ont-ils sur les paramètres tels que les volumes d`humeur aqueuse et de vitré, la surface et l`épaisseur de la sclère? Une étude très intéressante! La surface oculaire, l`épaisseur sclérale, et les volumes d`humeur aqueuse et de vitré de l`œil du chien et du cheval ont été mesurés dans une étude sur cadavres de 14 yeux de chiens et 16 yeux de chevaux. Les mesures ont été réalisées soit sur yeux frais, soit après fixation par le formol. La surface oculaire a été calculée selon la méthode de déplacement d`un fluide. Les globes oculaires ont été sectionnés afin de récupérer et quantifier les volumes d`humeur aqueuse et de vitré. L`épaisseur sclérale a été mesurée par méthode directe à l`aide d`un vernier, et indirecte par projection d`image et biomicroscopie à ultrasons. Résultats : La surface sclérale chez le chien et le cheval était de 12.87 ± 2.24 cm² et 57.23 ± 5.63 cm², respectivement. Le volume d`humeur aqueuse était de 0.77 ± 0.24 mL chez le chien et 3.04 ± 1.27 mL chez le cheval. Le volume moyen de vitré était de 1.7 ± 0.86 mL chez le chien et de 26.15 ± 4.87 mL chez le cheval. Chez le chien comme chez le cheval, l`épaisseur de la sclère était minimale au niveau de l`équateur : 0.34 ± 0.13 mm chez le chien et 0.53 ± 0.1 mm chez le cheval. Les mesures n`étaient pas significativement différentes selon la technique directe au vernier et indirecte par projection, ni entre les mesures des quatre cadrans supérieur, inférieur, nasal et temporal de l`œil. L`épaisseur sclérale était supérieure sur tissu frais que sur tissu fixé au formol pour la plupart des points de mesure. Conclusions: les mesures par biomicroscopie à ultrasons sont apparues plus homogènes et reproductibles que celles obtenues par méthode directe. La fixation au formol des yeux était associée à une épaisseur de la sclère significativement inférieure par rapport aux tissus frais. Source: Gilger, Brian C., Reeves, Keri-Ann & Salmon, Jacklyn H. Scanner de l’oeil pour une exposition de bétail au Nouveau-Mexique Diverses techniques sont en cours d’évaluation pour l’identification des humains et des animaux: puce électronique, analyse d’ADN, empreintes digitales, scanner de l’oeil, etc. Une nouvelle technique est aujourd’hui introduite lors d’expositions de bétail au Nouveau Mexique : dans la mesure où chaque rétine est unique, on procède à un scanner de la rétine! Les chercheurs de l’Université de l’Etat du Nouveau Mexique (UENM) sont en train de mettre au point une technique avancée de scanner de l’œil sur le bétail qui s’inscrira dans le système national de traçabilité pour la santé animale. Manny Encinias, spécialiste du bétail au Centre de Recherche Clayton sur le bétail à UENM, rapporte que les scanners de rétines prennent part à la tendance actuelle de développement des technologies d’identification du bétail. Cela consiste, sans aucune douleur, à envoyer un faisceau de lumière de courte durée en direction de l’oeil et à enregistrer la topographie des vaisseaux rétiniens. Chaque rétine, qu’elle soit bovine ou humaine, est unique et le scanner de la rétine est considéré comme l’une des méthodes d’identification les plus sûres. Les essais menés par l’UENM sont promus par un effort accru du Département de l’Agriculture des Etats-Unis (DAEU) pour la mise en place d’un système d’identification animale national. Le but est de pouvoir tracer et identifier tous les animaux et les exploitations qui ont été en contact avec un agent pathogène d’importance dans les 48 heures suivant le diagnostic initial de la maladie. Dans l’étude au Nouveau Mexique, la première du genre, les scientifiques ont testés 35 bœufs en vente issus de 18 fermes familiales du Comté de Quay, en combinant le scanner de l’œil et l’identification radio des boucles auriculaires pour l’évaluation de l’identification animale. La plupart des animaux étaient de grande valeur et des animaux d’exposition FFA ayant passé toute la saison précédente à transiter entre plusieurs expositions régionales de bétail. L’analyse d’ADN est une méthode coûteuse qui nécessite une technique de laboratoire complexe et longue. Des échantillons de poils ont également été perdus pendant le transport. Encinias continue en précisant que, parmi les animaux d’exposition, les chercheurs ont montré que les scanners de la rétine étaient une méthode d’identification animale quasi parfaite grâce à sa rapidité de mise en œuvre et à sa précision. Cependant, les scanners de l’œil pourraient ne pas être utilisables en pratique dans un ranch du fait de leur coût et des compétences techniques requises. Les projets d’identification animale, menés en collaboration avec la direction vétérinaire de l’état et le Registre du Bétail du Nouveau Mexique (RBNM), ont été financés par une bourse du DAEU, et ont été conçus pour évaluer la technique en particulier dans le contexte de productions animales diversifiées du Nouveau Mexique. Ron Parker, spécialiste de l’identification animale à l’UENM et au Registre du Bétail du Nouveau Mexique annonce que l’objectif du DAEU est celui d’un programme d’identification animale obligatoire pour Janvier 2009.
