SPIRONOLACTONE IN DOGS WITH DEGENERATIVE MITRAL VALVE DISEASEmembers
Spironolactone, an aldosterone antagonist, has been demonstrated to decrease mortality in human patients when added to other cardiac therapies.
Can it also increase survival if added to the other conventional therapies of dogs with naturally occurring myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD)? This was evaluated on more than 200 dogs!

ACE inhibitors to decrease left atrial pressuremembers
Despite many epidemiological reports concerning the efficacy of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors in dogs with mitral regurgitation (MR), the hemodynamic effects of ACE inhibitor administration have not been fully evaluated. Is the decrease of left atrial pressure another indication for these drugs?

Progressive Juvenile Glomerulonephropathy in related French Mastiff Dogsmembers
Familial juvenile glomerulonephropathy (JGN) is reported in several breeds of dogs. The mode of inheritance and spectrum of pathological lesions vary among breeds. A progressive JGN was detected in a pedigree of French Mastiff (FM) dogs, and this study describes clinical, laboratory, and histopathologic findings in related FM dogs suffering from progressive JGN and tries to determine the mode of inheritance of this condition.

Reproductive consequences after artificial insemination with PCV2 containing semenmembers
Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is associated with reproductive failure in female pigs. However, the association of PCV2-positive semen in the pathogenesis has not been elucidated. What happens if sows become infected with virus-containing semen at the artificial insemination? A very important experimental study illustrating that vaccination is highly recommended.

Oseltamivir in canine parvovirosismembers
Parvoviral enteritis remains a problem which can be life-threatening for the affected individual. Does oseltamivir, an expensive drug which is used in other viral infections in humans, ameliorate the disease morbidity, mortality, or both if it is added to the standard therapy for canine parvoviral enteritis? And which significant adverse effects are associated with its use?

First description of a canine palatolingual myokymiamembers
Palatolingual myokymia has only been reported in one human being. Although the co-occurrence with a pituitary adenoma might be incidental, a paraneoplastic pathogenetic mechanism is proposed. Its unique clinical presentation adds a new, albeit uncommon, syndrome to the differential diagnosis of upper airway complaints in dogs!

Tracheal shape in donkeys with and without tracheal obstructionmembers
Tracheal problems are common in small animals, especially in small or miniature dog breeds. In horses and large animals, morphologic changes of the tracheal diameter are no big problems. But donkeys are not small horses, and there is limited information on the gross tracheal morphology of donkeys with or without tracheal abnormalities. This study from Scotland is very informative!

Nasal rhinosporidiosis in two dogsmembers
Excessive sneezing in two adult dogs (4 and 7 years of age) were presented for evaluation and treatment of excessive sneezing. Physical examinations in both cases were within acceptable limits except for the presence of a single mass in the left nasal passage in the first case and left-sided nasal discharge in the second case.

Ultrasonographic intestinal patterns in cats with IBD and intestinal lymphomamembers
Middle aged or older cats with intestinal problems are commonly seen in daily practice, and an important diagnostic part is the ultrasonosgraphic examination of the abdomen and especially of the intestinal tract. An ultrasonographic pattern of thickened muscularis propria in the small intestine and lymphadenopathy have been associated with gastrointestinal lymphoma and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in cats. Is there an association of these imaging biomarkers with IBD and lymphoma?
